In My Night Kitchen*

Sometimes I stay up late just so I can get some baking done without anyone bothering me in the kitchen.  I made 2 of the 3 loaves of No-Knead Challah during the weekend and this last batch, decided to make it easier on myself and instead of braiding, just added it to the pan as balls and brushed the top with water to give it a crustier texture.  Middle of the night photo:

By the next night, nothing left.

I’m not sure I’ll use that recipe again, it was heavier and sweeter than my usual sweet yeast-dough recipe but it was soooo simple and quick.

Do you like baking? cooking?  What’s your favorite thing to make?

*Yes, that’s a reference to Maurice Sendak’s In the Night Kitchen book.

Designs by Vanessa - September Featured Blogger

The first thing you do when you see Vanessa’s blog, is say “Wow”.  Go, see:Designs by Vanessa

I love her features, one recent one especially, How To: Fabric Wall Art.  What a great project for those pieces of fabric I’ve picked up over the years… but never sewn with because I don’t want to cut them up!  Her How To: Shirt Full of Posies project is definitely giving me some ideas for how to jazz up some boring t-shirts in my closet, too.

Her Fabulous Finds features are so precious, everything she posts about is really unique.

Naturally, her etsy shop, designsbyvanessa, is filled with her stylish handmade creations, like this Darling Swallow Necklace:

and her Pretty Birdie Cards:

Visiting the Etsy Blogger Team sites each month has been really fun, I hope you all enjoy the short features I post here.

Knitting and Laughing at Myself

Pink baby sweater done! IMG_0008

This GOA yarn was great and squishy.  But I don’t think I’ll be trying to make baby sweaters in chunky yarn again.  They were quick to make, but I think too small for the bulk.

Want a good laugh?  Visit craftfailand read my article Bead Fail.  Or check out the bounty from my garden this summer.  What a disaster:

Do you find it easy to laugh at yourself?  Sometimes I think it’s the only way to get through some frustrating things.

Knitting Do Over

I couldn’t stop thinking about this sweater.  Especially as I began knitting the pink one in a much thinner yarn.  So, I went home and changed the buttons, unraveled the hat, and made a new one.  Now I’m happy.

E.T.T. Shop of the Week - Handmade by Sandi

Margaritaville earrings

Check out these adorable earrings from Handmade by Sandi!  She has a wonderful shop on etsy, filled with a great mix of handmade items.  I have to admit a certain affection for someone who delves into a variety of crafts (I like making so many different things myself, with so many different mediums.)

There’s a great interview with her over at the E.T.T. blog, and her special this week is: Free Shipping on all items in her “End of Summer Sale” Section.  You won’t be disappointed visiting this delightful shop!

How many different crafts do you dabble in?

Completed Knitting

Lately, I’ve been finishing projects! I don’t know if it’s the determined frame of mind, or the new yarn… but I’m going to run with it while the motivation lasts….

MONKEYSUITS set done!

I had to adjust the pattern because I knit pretty loose… and maybe the yarn was just too bulky for this pattern… so, I recalculated everything and cast on 30 to start for the back.   Everything went well until the hat… Or maybe I just don’t remember how big baby’s heads are, but it seems like the hat is huge, even with the pointy little accent on top.

Hat's too big!

Now to start one in pink.

Organized Knitting

Organized Chaos

pieKnits is a genius.  Brilliant.  In 15 minutes, I had my desk cleared up and needles organized.  Can you hear the angelic chorus?  Now I just have to figure out where to hang this, because it’s not going to stay on the doorknob.

Finished one baby sweater, it’s blocking now, going to work on the matching hat…. Will probably start baby sweater #2 tonight because it was fun and easy to make this pattern – pictures coming tomorrow!  (or see it on Ravelry.)

needle packages

While I was cleaning up, I noticed that a few needles were the same brand… but from different eras.  Check out the great packaging, and the $1.65 price tag! (Yeah, I know, .99 resale price, too!)  Now, they’re around $6.

Significant Knitting

The EtsyBloggers Team question this week is: “1)Sept. 11 is the anniversary of a very tragic event. To make the world better what do you do? Charity donations or support, volunteering, living green or ?”  Well, to keep things simple, I’ll answer in regards to today’s date only….

I often see charity knitting links and events but I’ve never participated in anything significant.  This time, I decided to jump in.  Today, as part of The September Project, my local library is having a Knit/Crochet-A-Thon for volunteers to make helmet liner hats to send to service men and women serving in cold climates.   The library will be open 24 hours, with many different events throughout the day, and completed liners, collected until 10/1 will be distributed by Pease Greeters.

I started knitting one of these last night with Cascade 220 Superwash wool (very nice!) – on size 6 needles since I knit pretty loose.

Knitting for troops

If you want a pattern, here’s the knit and crochet links that my library had posted.  Not sure I’ll be able to knit at the library till midnight, but I do plan on staying there at least until I get this one done.starssmall2

It’s Thursday

I don’t know where the week has gone.  I’m trying to knit a couple of baby sweaters in chunky yarn right now – gauge won’t work for me… it’s driving me c r a z y.  I simply have to work with the pattern I have right now and stop looking for new ones on Ravelry (it’s addicting!)

EtsyChai

I started a new “Member Focus” feature at the blog for the EtsyChai Team, check out the interview with artist Tamar Hammer

upcycled As part of the Etsy Trashion Team, we had a challenge/swap of “media” recyclables and I came up with some pieces from the mail that I received.  (You can see some of the process here, and more pictures at Flickr.)  They didn’t seem to fit with what I had in my present shop and it was recommended to me to donate them to the Etsy HOST Team.  I hope you take a moment to go over and visit this shop with a great purpose:

Of course, I have one million other things on my plate, too… will blog some more tonight or tomorrow about other projects I’m working on…

Keeping Hands Dry & Water Bottles Cozy Crochet Pattern

Water Bottle CozyMy kids have been carrying these stainless steel water bottles around for a few years now, (thank goodness they’re finally becoming trendy!  I don’t have to argue as much to remind them to take them along.)  I finally decided to sit down and make them a cover for their bottles and it was super easy.  Here’s how I did it – I’m sure there are many ways to figure this out and would love to hear how you come up with your own variation!  (Don’t forget to link back to tamdoll.blogspot.com if you make one of these and leave a comment so I know where to visit you.)

Keeping Hands Dry & Water Bottles Cozy Crochet Pattern

  • Sugar & Cream Cotton yarn & size G crochet hook (Any yarn and needle should work here, just make your base as big as necessary….)
  • A water bottle.  Mine are Klean Kanteen Classic, 27 oz. bottles.

I started with a magic circle – not necessary, you can look up how to do this online, or just chain 6 to begin and form a ring starting with Row 1.  Use a marker (bent paperclip for me) to keep track of where your new rows begin.  Your circle should have 6 stitches in it to begin.,,,

Row 1: 2sc into every stitch (12)
Row 2: *2sc into next stitch, 1sc* repeat around (18)
Row 3: *2sc into next stitch, 2sc* repeat around (24)
Row 4: *2sc into next stitch, 3sc* repeat around (30) – check now if you need to continue making your base bigger – does it match up against the bottom of your bottle?  Then continue onto Row 6.  If not, continue onto Row 5.
Row 5: *2sc into next stitch, 4sc* repeat around (36) – if necessary, repeat this method of enlarging the base by increasing the # of sc between 2sc for each additional row.

Row 6: Single crochet around and around, for as many rows as it takes to get to the top of your bottle.  No turning, no sl, no ch1.  Just single crochet round and round.  Move marker as needed at beginning of each new row.  (Truthfully, I lost my marker at one point and just eyeballed it’s location once I got closer to the top.)

When I ran out of yarn in the blue bottle, I had to use a thinner yarn that I had on hand… so every 8 stitches I did 2sc into one stitch to make up for the mis-matched gauge – that worked out pretty well.

As your project grows, slip the bottle inside to check how it’s going.  Give it a tiny stretch, tugging upwards for a snug fit.  When you get near the top, if your bottle has a dramatically more narrow top, you may want to evenly space just a few decreases.  Check that it will fit over your bottle before you continue.

When you’re one row away from as close as you want to be near the spout:
Eyelet row to cinch the cozy on: *sc, chain 2, skip 2 stitches * repeat around and slip last stitch into the first one of the last row… but…. before finishing the row, count the # of eyelets – an even # works best, pull out a few stitches if you need to.  If you have a space between the last eyelet and beginning of next round, then just sc into each stitch until the end of the row. (Why aren’t I more accurate?  Because each time I’ve made a bottle, my # of stitches was different due to yarn gauges… and yours might be too.  Thank goodness, this type of pattern doesn’t require precision.)
Check one more time that it will fit over your bottle.
Last row: sc across all stitches, including the chained ones.  Or you can add a row of picot stitch, ruffles, whatever decoration you like.  Remember, this is going to be up near your face, you may not want lots of fabric too close to the top or you’re in for lots of tickling.

Cord: Create a chain about 15” long.  Weave it in and out of the eyelets and check if you want to add more chains, or take some out (depends on if you want to use this as a handle, or if the yarn is very stretchy, or your own aesthetic.)  Pull the thread through your last chain and stitch it to the beginning of the chain, forming a big loop.  You can make a slip knot and carry off your bottle in style!

I can’t wait to hear your comments, get your feedback, and hopefully – some links to your own projects based on this bottle cozyI’m also on Ravelry if you’d like to connect there.  If you find any error, please let me know, so I can make corrections.

I love houses!  Little, tiny houses are my favorite so it' was easy to pick out a favorite from this week’s shop of the week, inmyheadstudios

I like how Vickie adds dangling beads to so many of her upcycled scrabble tile and domino charms, too – that little bit of sparkle and color really makes the pieces unique.

SHOP OF THE WEEK SPECIAL: “15% off all orders (not including shipping).Discount refunded via Paypal.”  You must stop by her shop and see all her beautiful, affordable, pieces.

What are your passions and do you make a full-time living from them?  I wish I could!
